Comenzó el Campeonato Mundial de Ajedrez versión 2005. En la ciudad de San Luis, Argentina, la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE) reunió a ocho de los mejores ajedrecistas del mundo, para determinar un nuevo campeón mundial; ellos son: Vishwanathan Anand (India, Elo 2788), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria, Elo 2788), Peter Leko (Hungría, Elo 2763), Peter Svidler (Rusia, Elo 2738), Judit Polgar (Hungría, Elo 2735; la figura femenina más importante en la historia del ajedrez), Michael Adams (Inglaterra, Elo 2719), Alexander Morozevich (Rusia, Elo 2707) y el actual campeón FIDE Rustam Kasimdzhanov (Uzbekistán, Elo 2670). En la primera ronda Anand y Topalov impusieron su favoritismo ganando ambos con piezas negras a Polgar y Leko respectivamente. Las partidas Svidler-Adams y Morozevich-Kasimdzhanov terminaron en tablas, en esta última Kasimdzhanov tuvo buenas chances de victoria.
